In brief: Workers protest after abrupt closure of factory in Mexico

* Workers of Componentes Universales, a manufacturer of electrical equipment and supplies in Mexico’s Tamaulipas state, have protested following the abrupt closure of the factory last month. Juan Villafuerte Morales, the secretary general of the Sindicato de Jornaleros y Obreros Industriales y de la Industria Maquiladora (SJOIIM) workers’ union that represents hundreds of employees at the company, accompanied the workers who are demanding severance pay and an explanation for the abrupt closure. According to Villafuerte, employees were notified of the closure on 22 March by a notice attached to the gates outside the factory. SJOIIM told the local press that it had received an email from executives at the company stating they did not have the resources to continue operating.
