ECUADOR: Lasso relaxes gun controls

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso issued a decree on 1 April authorising citizens to carry and use firearms in self-defence. Whilst the surprise move comes amid a very real public security crisis, it should also be viewed in light of the impeachment trial that Lasso is likely to face next month [WR-23-13]. The relaxation of gun controls won the praise of the conservative Partido Social Cristiano (PSC), which looks set to play a decisive role in the impeachment vote, although the PSC’s leadership has said that the party’s legislators will still vote to remove Lasso.
