PARAGUAY: Peña gets boost but wrestles with Colorado divisions

Jorge Gómez Otaño, one of 13 candidates competing in Paraguay’s presidential elections, withdrew from the race and threw his weight behind Santiago Peña, the candidate of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) on 5 April. Gómez Otaño was standing for the Unión Nacional de Ciudadanos Éticos (Unace). Unace is far from the electoral force it was a decade ago, but Peña will take support from wherever he can get it right now. While he emerges a comfortable winner in several recent surveys ahead of the elections on 30 April, several others predict a very close contest with a slight edge for his main rival Efraín Alegre of the opposition coalition Concertación para un Nuevo Paraguay.
