MEXICO: Iberdrola overcome?

No love has been lost between Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Spanish energy company Iberdrola. A frequent target of verbal attacks since López Obrador took office in 2018, Iberdrola has now announced that it is selling the bulk of its power generating assets in Mexico to the government itself for around US$6bn. López Obrador has hailed the deal as a “new nationalisation” as he takes a step closer to his goal of making Mexico self-sufficient in energy generation by the end of his term in 2024.
