Mexicans believe the drugs gangs are winning

President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa is under criticism from the Right over his administration's key initiative: the war against the drug gangs. On 2 June, one of his long time critics, Manuel Espino Barrientos, a former president of the ruling Partido Acción Nacional, said that the policy was not working. What makes this criticism more pertinent is an opinion poll in Reforma, one of the main Mexico City newspapers which found that most Mexicans also thought that the government was not winning the war against the drug gangs. The poll also found that Mexicans believe that Calderón and his government had no alternative but to carry on with their current policy.
