Calderón goes for consensus reform

On teachers' day, 15 May, President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa launched his education reform. The key point about these reforms is that they have been endorsed by Elba Esther Gordillo, the powerful leader of the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (SNTE). The reforms were drawn up the education minister, Josefina Vázquez Mota, who has previously been severely criticisedby Gordillo.
