* Brazil’s national statistics department has released the latest figures on industrial production, which showed a slight drop of 0.2% in February compared with the previous month and a 2.4% drop in comparison to February 2022. Industrial production for this February was also 2.6% lower than that recorded in February 2020, prior to the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. A monthly drop in production was recorded for nine of the 25 categories measured, including pharmaceutical products (-4.5%), chemical products (-1.8%), and food products (-1.1%), with February being the second consecutive month of decreasing food production. Ibge research coordinator André Macedo pointed out that the drop in food products was partially caused by the suspension of beef exports to China implemented on 23 February after the detection of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as ‘mad cow disease’).
