MEXICO: Supreme court delivers blows to López Obrador

Mexico’s supreme court (SCJN) issued two rulings this week that rolled back some of the power that the armed forces have amassed under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and, in doing so, undermined a key presidential initiative. This signals an escalation of the tensions that have existed between the judiciary and the executive since Norma Piña assumed the presidency of the SCJN in January [WR-23-01]. The rulings will confirm López Obrador’s concerns that the SCJN under Piña is less likely to rule in favour of his government’s more controversial initiatives. They also come as the armed forces are facing heightened scrutiny on multiple issues.
