BRAZIL: Lojas Americanas – downfall of a retail empire?

For nearly a century, Lojas Americanas was the retail name per se in Brazil, the quintessential Five and Dime store, a South American Woolworth’s. With nearly 2,000 physical retail outlets in all 27 states, any halfway respectable city had an outlet with the red and white logo sign. This all came crashing down earlier this year.
