In brief: Bolivia to support Venezuela’s natural gas sector

* Bolivia’s President Luis Arce has met with his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, in Caracas, where he pledged Bolivian support for Venezuela’s natural gas sector. Arce said that “Bolivia has a great deal of experience regarding gas; Venezuela is taking its first steps to becoming a gas producing and exporting country, so Bolivia has a lot of experience that it can convey in order to improve the productive capacity of the sister republic of Venezuela”. Arce and Maduro signed a memorandum of understanding in which they agreed that the countries’ governments would explore opportunities for cooperation in the national gas sector. A similar agreement was also signed between Venezuela’s state oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa), and Bolivia’s state hydrocarbons company, Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB). Arce and Maduro also signed 12 other agreements on education, justice, health, mining, oil, production, information, and air traffic, among other things. Arce said that “we want Venezuela to feel that it has a great ally in Bolivia, that Bolivia is a partner not just in commercial matters, but above all in strategic affairs”.
