In brief: Honduras economic development minister quits

*Honduras’s minister for economic development, Pedro Barquero, has resigned over proposed tax reforms put forward by the leftist Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by President Xiomara Castro which, the government says, aims to eliminate longstanding tax breaks (some which have been in place for four decades), lift banking secrecy laws, and cease the practice of writing off unpaid corporate tax debts. Barquero has publicly opposed the reforms saying they will “asphyxiate the economy”. A member of Partido Salvador de Honduras (PSH), which forged an electoral alliance with Libre that unravelled in October 2022, Barquero is the first minister to resign since Castro took office in January 2022.
