In brief: Monthly drop in Brazil’s trade surplus

* Brazil’s ministry of development, industry, and foreign trade has released the latest figures for the country’s trade balance which show a surplus of US$8.22bn in April. While this marks a 5.5% increase from the surplus recorded in April 2022, in monthly terms, the figure is down from the US$10.96bn surplus registered in March. Exports for April came to US$27.37bn and imports totalled US$19.14bn. Brazil’s agricultural exports were valued at US$8.86bn in April, marking a 13.7% yearly increase, while a yearly decrease was recorded in the value of exports from the extractive industries, which came to US$5.23bn (-6.6%). Brazil’s main export destination in April 2023 was China, Hong Kong, and Macau, with monthly exports valued at US$9.36bn, followed by exports to the European Union (EU), valued at US$3.46bn.
