In brief: Metro in Ecuador’s capital Quito faces teething problems

* Authorities in Ecuador have heralded the opening of a metro system in the capital Quito, announcing that it successfully carried 25,000 passengers on its first day of operations despite a number of teething problems. The metro authority, Metro de Quito, noted that there had been problems with the issuing of tickets when the metro system opened on 2 May, which have now been “partially” resolved. It also said that bottlenecks caused by “technical issues” at the Quitumbe metro station, which serves a major bus terminal, forced the closure of the station in the afternoon. Construction began on the 15-stop, 22km metro system in 2012 and was scheduled to be completed in 2020, but the metro’s opening was delayed for three years by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
