SURINAME: Clashes over land rights claim two lives

Two people were reportedly killed in a gunfight with the security forces near the indigenous village of Pikin Saron on 2 May. The clashes took place after a group of gunmen demanding respect for land rights torched a police station, among other things, before breaking into the state-owned company Grassalco, which operates the nearby Maripaston gold mine concession, and taking various employees hostage. They were subsequently freed after a joint police and army operation, according to the Surinamese daily De Ware Tijd. The government is holding emergency talks with indigenous leaders in the area.
