Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei paid a visit to Taiwan where he met President Tsai Ing-wen last week. Giammattei’s visit - his first as head of state since taking office in January 2020 - comes less than a month after a Taiwanese delegation, headed up by Tsai, visited Guatemala [
WR-23-14]. The bilateral relationship continues to draw particular scrutiny coming just weeks after Honduras became the latest country in the sub-region to terminate diplomatic relations with Taiwan in order to establish ties with mainland China instead [
WR-23-13].
