Ruling Colorados sweep to total victory in Paraguay

Paraguay’s elections on 30 April could scarcely have gone any better for the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC). Not only did the party’s presidential candidate, Santiago Peña, win comfortably but it also seized control of both chambers of congress for the first time in 25 years and emerged victorious in all bar two of the 17 gubernatorial elections. And yet the next five years will be far from plain sailing for the ANR-PC in general and Peña in particular.
