URUGUAY: Housing scandal fuels coalition tensions

Tensions broke out in Uruguay’s five-party ruling coalition this week after President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou fired the housing minister, Irene Moreira, a member of the right-wing Cabildo Abierto (CA), over irregularities. The leader of CA, Senator Guido Manini Ríos, expressed “profound disquiet” over the decision to dismiss Moreira, his wife, which he described as “unjustified and mistaken” in a statement to the press on 8 May.
