BRAZIL: Lula appeases European allies

The openness of Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to foster diplomatic relations with every world power, regardless of geopolitical tensions, has forced him to walk a diplomatic tightrope, a task made more complicated because of his reluctance to condemn Russia’s aggression against Ukraine explicitly. But Lula has been trying to regain the favour of Ukraine’s European allies, as suggested in his meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on 9 May, and in sending his chief foreign policy adviser, Celso Amorim, to visit Kyiv on 10 May.
