In brief: IMF in talks with Argentina over drought impact

* The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said that recent virtual talks with Argentina’s government have been “constructive”. Speaking at a press conference, IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack said the focus of discussions was on “strengthening the authorities’ programme while also taking into account the drought”. This suggests the Fund may be receptive to the Argentine government’s call for a ‘re-think’ of the terms of its US$44bn debt programme due to extraordinary reasons, which President Alberto Fernández claims applies to the extended drought caused by climate change.
