In brief: Mexico’s president meets with business magnates

*Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has received top business representatives in the national palace. Daniel Chávez Morán, founder of Mexican tourism consortium Grupo Vidanta; Germán Larrea, owner of Mexican conglomerate Grupo México; Miguel Rincón, CEO of Mexican paper manufacturer Bio Pappel; Bernardo Gómez, CEO of Mexican media giant Televisa; and Carlos Hank, CEO of Mexico’s financial group, Grupo Financiero Banorte, were among those reported to have arrived at the national palace for the meeting. Speaking to press, Rincón said that Mexico’s economy was doing “very well”, and that he thought Mexico was “the best place to invest in the world”. This follows a meeting between López Obrador and Mexican billionaire business magnate Carlos Slim on 11 May. In a press conference on 16 May, López Obrador said he and Slim agreed that “Mexico is one of the most attractive countries for foreign investment”, noting the current strength of the Mexican peso against the US dollar and general “economic and financial stability”.
