In brief: Russia and Cuba seek to boost trade

* Cuba’s deputy prime minister and foreign trade & investment minister, Ricardo Cabrisas, and the president of Cuba’s chamber of commerce, Antonio Carricarte, have attended the launch of a two-day Cuba-Russia economic business forum in Cuba’s capital, Havana. According to Cuban state mouthpiece Granma, at the event, which was attended by 52 Russian firms and 106 Cuban companies, an agreement was reached to create a Russia section in Cuba’s chamber of commerce, while a deal was also signed on Cuba’s relations with Russia’s Krasnodar territory, specifically with regard to the agri-food sector. Russia’s trade representative in Cuba, Sergei Baldin, said that bilateral trade totalled US$451m in 2022, of which 92% was fuel supplies and the rest, food. It follows other signs of strengthening ties as indicated in a trip last month to Cuba by Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, which produced pledges to build up trade and economic cooperation.
