ARGENTINA: Peronism prevails in provinces

The national backdrop could not have looked much bleaker for the Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists): inflation soaring well beyond 100% amid an acute cost-of-living crisis; the economy teetering on the brink; President Alberto Fernández a lame duck in a divided ruling coalition. No matter. The power of provincial Peronism was underscored on 14 May when all three incumbent governors were re-elected, two of them romping to victory. Voters are discerning enough to differentiate between provincial and national politics, but the results were still a damp squib for the right-of-centre opposition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) coalition, which had hoped to capitalise on the national government’s travails to make inroads into the PJ’s provincial pre-eminence.
