EL SALVADOR: Bukele rages as “zero murder” record tarnished

“Gang members will never leave [prison],” El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele said on 16 May. Bukele was responding to the murder of a police officer by suspected mara gang members. On the same day, the legislative assembly, controlled by his Nuevas Ideas party, voted for the fourteenth consecutive month since March last year to extend the government’s state of emergency, under which suspected gang members have been arrested en masse without trial, taking the prison population to a record 68,000.
