In brief: Cuba’s inflation continues to surge

* Independent media such as the Cuban news website, El Toque, have cited official figures from Cuba’s national statistics institute (ONEI) which show that year-on-year inflation in Cuba was running at 45.36% in April, up from 23.69% in April 2022. According to the same figures, food & non-alcoholic drinks, and the restaurant sector were the main drivers, with increases of 70.67% and 64.91% respectively.  The reports come as Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel was recently forced to acknowledge Cuba’s economic difficulties which have intensified over a fuel shortage crisis. In a press conference on 18 May, he recognised that the energy situation, particularly regarding fuel, has “had an important impact on the country’s economy and on the population”. He also alluded to the “complex situation regarding food imports and price increases” and acknowledged that there is “much dissatisfaction” regarding all of this. His comments follow recent anti-government protests over these issues.
