In brief: Bird flu threatens Brazil’s poultry industry

* Brazil’s agriculture ministry has declared a nationwide state of emergency after eight cases of the H5N1 strain of bird flu (avian influenza) was detected in wild birds in recent days. Although no cases have been reported among commercial poultry such as chicken, the health emergency will be in effect for 180 days – during which the ministry has stated that it will work to mobilise its financial, technological, and logistical capabilities and resources to prevent the spread of the disease to people and commercial poultry and other birds. The first suspected case was reported on 10 May in the south-eastern state of Espírito Santo. Of the eight known cases, seven were in Espírito Santo and one in Rio de Janeiro state.
