In brief: Brazil’s Petrobras to appeal ban on Amazon oil project

* Brazil’s state-controlled oil company Petrobras has announced plans to appeal the decision by the federal environmental enforcement agency (Ibama) to block a proposed offshore oil exploration project near the mouth of the Amazon river. Ibama had denied a licence for Petrobras to extract oil from the FZA-M-59 block, off the coast of the northern Amapá state, on the grounds that more environmental evaluation needs to be carried out. Petrobras has since insisted that it had met “all the technical demands required by Ibama.” As part of its appeal against Ibama’s decision, Petrobras has stated that it would include new measures to mitigate environmental risks, including an expansion of its emergency services to respond to potential oil spills or accidents. The company already has a fauna rehabilitation centre in Belém, the capital of the Pará state, and it has committed to expanding its emergency services to a similar centre in Oiapoque municipality, Amapá state.
