COLOMBIA: Ceasefire with dissident Farc alliance collapses

One by one, Colombia’s main illegal armed groups are raising serious doubts over whether President Gustavo Petro will be able to implement his flagship ‘total peace’ initiative. The latest blow to Petro’s peace plans came from the Estado Mayor Central (EMC) – the largest grouping of dissident units of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group, which the government has blamed for the murder of four teenagers in the south-western department of Putumayo on 17 May. In response to the killings, the Petro administration suspended its ceasefire with the EMC, which joins the Clan del Golfo drug trafficking organisation in being at least temporarily cast out of the total peace project.
