PERU: Setback in prosecutors’ case against Kuczynski

Peru’s former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016-2018) earned a short-term reprieve on 22 May when a judge ordered prosecutors to restart their investigation into him. The ruling was obtained after Kuczynski’s lawyers claimed that his right to defence had not been respected. Prosecutors are seeking a 35-year sentence for the 84-year-old Kuczynski, who is accused of creating a criminal enterprise that allegedly received some US$12m in bribes from the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht.
