BRAZIL: Ministers rail against restructuring

Brazil’s environment minister, Marina Silva, has spoken out against an executive decree (MP) which would strip some subordinate agencies and functions away from her ministry as well as the ministry for indigenous peoples led by Sônia Guajajara. Initially signed in January, the decree (known as MP 1154/23) has been amended and submitted to congress by federal deputy Isnaldo Bulhões Jr. of the centrist Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB) party. It was approved by a congressional committee on 24 May. The ministerial restructuring represents a possible move to placate more centrist allies of the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), such as the MDB, much to the dismay of left-leaning environmentalist figures.
