PERU: Militarising the borders

Peru’s President Dina Boluarte has grown increasingly hardline on illegal migration since April, veering into the xenophobic with her rhetoric and blaming migrants for rising crime. On 27 April she went a step further, declaring a state of emergency along Peru’s borders and deploying the military to assist in migration controls. The government’s new focus on migration seems motivated by Boluarte’s dismal approval rating, which an Ipsos poll put at just 15% in mid-April.
