REGION: Bird flu concerns sweep through Southern Cone

The world’s largest-ever outbreak of avian influenza has been decimating the global bird population since October 2021. Concerns that bird flu might turn into the next pandemic have been heightened as the H5N1 strain of highly pathogenic influenza A has also spread to mammals, including some rare cases of human infection. It is only recently that the global outbreak reached all the Southern Cone countries of Latin America, but it now has authorities there on the alert too.
