*Mexico’s President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador has met with US Secretary of Transportation
Pete Buttigieg to discuss Mexico’s efforts to recover its Category 1 air safety rating. The meeting comes two years after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded Mexico’s air safety rating to Category 2, meaning Mexico cannot add capacity, frequencies, or routes to the US. López Obrador also stated that he spoke with Buttigieg about the transfer of cargo airlines to the Felipe Ángeles international airport (AIFA), which was inaugurated in March 2022 as part of the president’s flagship infrastructure projects. Following the meeting, López Obrador said Buttigieg was an
“intelligent and gracious person” and the discussion had been
“purposeful and respectful”. US ambassador to Mexico,
Ken Salazar, also tweeted that the meeting had been
“productive”. In a press conference prior to the meeting, López Obrador had claimed that Mexico had complied with
“absolutely everything” the FAA had laid out in order to recover the top air safety rating.
