MEXICO: Aviation sector faces continued uncertainty

More than 1,200 flights were disrupted between 19 and 22 May in and around Mexico City (CDMX) as a result of volcanic ash from Popocatépetl, an active volcano located in central Mexico. Given its current level of activity, further disruption is possible. The volcanic activity has compounded existing challenges for Mexico’s aviation sector, which on 25 May marked two years of having its air safety rating downgraded by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) from Category 1 to Category 2, which applies to only around a dozen countries around the world [EB-21-06].
