In brief: Nicaragua and Russia strengthen economic ties

* A Nicaraguan delegation has travelled to Russia to participate in the 26th Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum. The delegation includes Finance Minister Iván Acosta; Laureano Ortega, the son of President Daniel Ortega and First Lady Rosario Murillo who is presidential advisor on trade and investment; transport and infrastructure minister General Oscar Mojica; and health minister Martha Reyes, among others. According to the Nicaraguan government, the delegation also took part in a meeting of an inter-governmental Russia-Nicaragua mixed commission with the objective of reviewing and promoting cooperation projects in areas including transport, food security, health, energy, investment, trade, higher education, media and communication, and scientific and technological advancement. Acosta participated in a panel entitled ‘Dedollarisation, the future of money’ while Reyes visited the St. Petersburg Institute of Vaccines and Serums in order to “continue expanding the capacities of the Mechinikov Latin American Institute of Biotechnology”, a biopharmaceutical plant inaugurated in Managua in 2016. This is the latest sign of burgeoning ties between Moscow and Managua, which in April hosted Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov.
