In brief: Mexico’s gov’t completes airline purchase

*Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced that the government has completed the purchase of the brand of defunct airline Mexicana de Aviación, or Mexicana. He confirmed that the new public airline, run by the defence ministry (Sedena), would take the name of Mexicana, and would start operations from 1 December. He also announced that the government had acquired the assets of the airline too, following the resolution of a dispute with former employees of the airline. López Obrador stated that the 6,000 former Mexicana employees would receive around M$1bn (US$5.87m) between them in accordance with the evaluation of the brand and its assets. He said the operation would provide justice and repair damages “after a series of acts of corruption and looting by previous governments that led to the bankruptcy of Mexicana”.
