GUATEMALA: ‘Pacto de corruptos’ laid bare

The shock performance of anti-graft candidate, Bernardo Arévalo in Guatemala’s 25 June presidential elections has shone a new light on public anger with the so-called ‘pacto de corruptos’ - an allusion to entrenched corruption in Guatemala’s political institutions which has flourished under the conservative Vamos government led by President Alejandro Giammattei. Here we consider the backdrop of Guatemala’s losing battle against public corruption which gave rise to Arévalo’s surprise second place finish and his spot in the 20 August presidential run-off to face establishment candidate former first lady (2008-2012) Sandra Torres.
