REGION: Parlacen ditches Taiwan for China

The Central American Parliament (Parlacen) decided to replace Taiwan as a permanent observer on 22 August, awarding the role to China instead. This was a significant setback for Taiwan, which has been losing ground in the sub-region rapidly in recent years as one country after another has switched diplomatic allegiance to China. The Taiwanese government released a statement expressing its “energetic protest” and accusing Beijing of seeking “to destroy democracy in Central America” in pursuit of its ambition to expand in the sub-region.
