Introduction

On 9 August El Salvador’s legislature voted for another 30-day extension of the state of emergency, the 17th since March 2022, when President Nayib Bukele initiated his crackdown on the country’s street gangs. The story so far seems to be that those hardline measures, imposed by an authoritarian leader, are proving extremely popular, increasing his re-election chances in February 2024, as we explore in the first article of the September 2023 edition of the Latin American Regional Report: Caribbean & Central America.
