Introduction

In August, Argentina held its presidential primaries (Paso) which serve as a gauge of public opinion ahead of the first round of presidential elections, which will be held on 22 October. Far-right libertarian candidate Javier Milei came first with around 30% of the vote, defying the polls to beat traditional rivals Unión por la Patria (UP, the ruling Peronist coalition) and the right-wing opposition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC).
