In brief: Dominican Republic partially reopens border for trade

* The Dominican Republic’s border with Haiti has been reopened to allow some trade but not the movement of people. This was announced by the Dominican Republic’s presidential spokesperson Homero Figueroa, who said this was in line with new measures agreed by the national security council on 9 October. He said that new provisional trade corridors (CCP) would be opened under strict military control and biometric registry in the border provinces of Dajabón, Elías Piña, Independencia and Pedernales to facilitate the trade of essential Dominican products such as food and medicines, especially for children. However, Figueroa said that the border remained closed indefinitely for the transit of people. On 14 September President Luis Abinader announced the closure of the country’s border with Haiti in response to the construction of a canal in Dajabón province, which is diverting water from the shared Dajabón river (also known as Rio Masacre), and which the Abinader government says violates three international treaties.
