BRAZIL: Authorities respond to extreme weather

As of 11 October, the mayors of 98 municipalities in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina had declared emergencies due to heavy rains and floods. Santa Catarina’s governor, Jorginho Mello, met the federal minister of regional development, Waldez Góes, to discuss further support for the state authorities’ humanitarian response measures and on 11 October a federal task force led by Góes arrived in the worst-affected areas. One week earlier, Góes had joined a federal government task force responding to another emergency in the northern state of Amazonas, which has been suffering an intense drought.
