South American countries have experienced plenty of highs and lows in football over the years – both on and off the pitch. But the decision by Fifa, the governing body of the world’s most popular game, to mark the centenary of the first tournament in Uruguay in 1930 with a series of matches in the region to kickstart the 2030 tournament was only supposed to have winners. Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay participated in talks with Fifa to stage the opening matches of the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. But when Fifa unveiled its plans last week, one of the four South American countries had been quietly dropped.
