NICARAGUA: Indigenous party status revoked

Nicaragua’s government has cancelled the legal status of the indigenous party Yatama (Yapti Tasba Masraka Nanih Asla Takanka), a former ally of President Daniel Ortega. In line with the relentless crackdown on dissent, the move against Yatama, which was established in the late 1980s and has a presence on the impoverished Caribbean coast (comprising the North Atlantic and South Atlantic autonomous regions [Raan and Raas]), comes as the Ortega government has faced more general criticism over the plight of the country’s indigenous sector – such that in July the United Nations (UN) Green Climate Fund suspended a forest conservation project citing violence against indigenous people [WR-23-32].
