US officials back Guatemala’s president-elect

Guatemala: On 4 October Samantha Power, administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), met with Guatemala’s president-elect Bernardo Arévalo in Washington to congratulate him on his win in the August presidential run-off and underscore the US government’s “strong commitment to supporting a peaceful democratic transition of power in Guatemala.” In their meeting, Power and Arévalo discussed the longstanding partnership between USAID and Guatemala. They also explored the priorities shared by both nations, such as “creating economic opportunities; strengthening governance through greater accountability and transparency of public institutions; improving security, health, and education conditions for all Guatemalans; and expanding access to lawful pathways for migration to the United States.” On social media, Power wrote that the core focus of the meeting revolved around “ensuring the will of the Guatemalan people is respected” and stated that the US and Guatemala would work together to “strengthen democracy, prosperity, and security.” While in the US, Arévalo also met with other US officials, who all expressed backing for Arévalo. These included national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, special president advisor for the Americas, Chris Dodd, deputy national security advisor to the vice president, Rebecca Lissner, and national security council senior director for the Western Hemisphere, Juan Gonzalez.
