* Ecuador’s energy and mining ministry has declared an emergency in the country’s electricity sector due to the impact of low water levels on hydroelectric power plants. In a statement, the ministry noted that river levels are low in the Amazon region and the rainy season in the west of the country has arrived late due to the El Niño climate phenomenon. Colombia has been grappling with the same problem, forcing the country to reduce its energy supply to Ecuador which has caused power cuts and driven up prices. At the same time, the statement noted that there has been an “unusual” spike in electricity usage in Ecuador. Under the emergency measures, the government has ordered the Termogás Machala power plant in El Oro province, which is powered by natural gas, to “maximise” its power production.
