BRAZIL: Climate emergencies threaten north and south

With the north of Brazil struggling with the worst drought on record, and the south battered by heavy rains and floods, on 4 October Brazil’s federal government sent task forces to the northern state of Amazonas and to the southern state of Santa Catarina one week later. The extreme weather on both sides of the country has been attributed to the El Niño weather phenomenon and has spurred the authorities to implement a range of humanitarian response measures.
