Senior US official visits El Salvador, Guatemala
El Salvador/Guatemala: On 26 October a US delegation led by Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols met with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. On social media Nichols said he and Bukele discussed “El Salvador’s support for the international mission in Haiti, efforts to promote foreign direct investment in El Salvador, bilateral cooperation on rule of law, and mutual efforts to address irregular migration”. Nichols’ visit to El Salvador comes amid concerns regarding human rights abuses in the country since the implementation of a state of emergency to combat gangs in March 2022. Nichols also visited human rights organisation, Instituto Universitario de Derechos Humanos (Idhuca), at the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in San Salvador where he discussed “the unwavering US commitment to supporting and protecting civil society actors in El Salvador”. While in El Salvador Nichols also held a meeting with local business leaders in which he discussed ways to strengthen trade ties between the two nations and boost US investment. Prior to his visit to El Salvador, Nichols visited Guatemala where he met with president-elect Bernardo Arévalo, and Foreign Minister Mario Búcaro on 24 October in order to discuss the facilitation of a peaceful transition process ahead of Arévalo being sworn into office in January 2024. The US has been highly critical of attempts to sabotage the democratic transition in Guatemala, announcing on 31 October that it was imposing visa restrictions on “over a dozen” Guatemalans from the public and private sectors accused of “engaging in undermining democracy and the rule of law”. While in Guatemala, Nichols also discussed irregular migration and the ongoing collaborative efforts between the US and Guatemala to address this challenge.
