PANAMA: Protests turn deadly as government backtracks

There is little sign of the unrest which has rocked Panama in recent weeks abating. The protests, which turned deadly on 7 November after two demonstrators were shot dead by an angry motorist, are over demands for the repeal of the recently approved new contract between the government and Minera Panamá S.A. (MPSA), the subsidiary of Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals (FQM), regarding the copper mine Cobre Panamá [WR-23-43].
