In brief: Brazil’s services sector contracts for second consecutive month

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for the services sector, showing a monthly contraction of 0.3% in September. This comes after a drop in services volume was registered in August (-0.9%). The sector also showed a contraction of 1.2% compared with September 2022. However, the accumulated services volume in the first nine months of 2023 showed a 3.4% increase compared with the same period last year, and the accumulated figure for the 12 months until September was up 4.4% compared with the previous 12-month period. Of the five services categories measured, three showed a monthly contraction this September. The categories which saw the greatest drop in volume were professional & administrative services (-1.1%) and information & communication services (-0.7%).
