What’s in the toolbox?

A large number of techniques are being used, so it is useful to begin with some basic definitions. A research guide compiled by the Library of the University of Michigan in the US suggests there is a wide information ecosystem which is composed of both misinformation and disinformation. Misinformation is “false or inaccurate information that is mistakenly or inadvertently spread: the intent is not to deceive”. On the other hand, disinformation is false information that is deliberately created and spread “in order to influence public opinion or obscure the truth”.
